Two common personal’s resolutions are to lose weight and get in shape. Audiobooks and podcasts are the perfect tools to help you stay motivated to take daily walks, because you always have another chapter or another podcast to enjoy. Here are some resources for audiobooks and podcasts.

 

Walk 30 Minutes a Day to Lose Weight

 

Walking at least 30 minutes a day will help you lose weight and become physically fit. The Oprah Winfrey Show posted notes on Oprah.com about “Dr. Oz’s ’90-Day Live Longer, Feel Younger Plan.'” Dr. Micheal Roizen, one of the health experts who suggested tips for the weight loss plan, discussed the importance of walking 30 minutes daily.

 

According to the Oprah Winfrey Show’s notes, “Dr. Roizen says you absolutely must walk at least 30 minutes every day. “There’s a hurricane? You walk 30 minutes a day,” he says. “Earthquake – 30 minutes a day. Tornado – 30 minutes a day. Snowstorm – 30 minutes a day.” If you commit to walking 30 minutes a day, the right audiobook or podcast can help you stay on track.

 

You will find yourself invested in a story or a series, and waking up to cold morning walks will be easier because you will be looking forward to the next audiobook or the next podcast.

 

Audible.com Membership Plans

 

One of the easiest ways to get audiobooks is through Audible.com’s membership plan. There is a monthly fee to be an Audible.com member, but every month you can get at least one audiobook to listen to on your walks. This is a great way to stay committed to walking; you will have a new audiobook every month to listen to on your walk.

 

Audible has different membership plans that you can subscribe to and get audiobooks on a regular basis. You can choose the audiobooks. Most audiobooks are 1 credit, but some are two credits. Plans range from $15 for one audiobook a month to $230 for 24 audiobooks a year. There are often sign up specials, so search for “Audible.com promotions” before you commit to a plan.

 

Learn How to Use iTunes Podcasts

 

Podcasts are like free audiobooks. There are church podcasts so that you can grow spiritually while you lose weight, there are news podcasts so that you can keep up with current events while you walk, and there are entertainment podcasts so you can listen to stories and hear interviews while you get in shape. You can even listen to classes from university with iTunes U podcasts.

 

Some of the most popular podcasts on iTunes are This American Life from Chicago Public Radio and Fresh Air from NPR. You can learn more about finding and downloading podcasts for iPods on Apple’s “iTunes Podcasts” page.

 

The University of Virginia Nutrition Services newsletter article “Get Hooked on Exercise” says that good exercise habits “can happen as quickly as six to eight weeks. Once you feel the benefits of exercise, it will be your lifestyle.” If you commit to three months of daily 30 minute walks and support yourself with interesting audiobooks and podcasts, you might find that these healthy walks are a habit by spring.
